Understanding the Difference Between a Unit and a Syringe and How Much Is Typical

AT DERMACARE MEDICAL AESTHETICS

If you’ve ever considered getting BOTOX® or another neuromodulator like Dysport® or Xeomin®, then you’ve probably heard the term “units” when talking about dosing. But what exactly is a unit, and how many do you actually need? The same thing goes for “syringes” of filler. Whether you’re interested in filler for lip enhancement, cheek contouring, or smoothing smile lines, knowing how many syringes of filler or the amount of milliliters (ml) used to reach your aesthetic goals can help make your treatment more enjoyable. Dermacare Medical Aesthetics is here for you every step of the way, so let us explain how the dosing works for our injectable treatments.

What Is a Unit of Neuromodulator?

A unit is a standardized measurement used to quantify how much of the product is being injected. Each brand has its own unit system based on how the product is prepared and tested in the lab. For example, 1 unit of Botox isn’t the same as 1 unit of Dysport (Dysport units are smaller, so you typically need more of them for the same effect).

Units are not “one-size-fits-all” — the number needed varies based on:

  • The area being treated
  • The strength and size of your muscles
  • Your individual goals
  • Your history with neuromodulators (first-time vs. maintenance)

Typical Units by Treatment Area (Using Botox as an Example)

Here’s a general idea of how many Botox units are commonly recommended for some of the most popular areas:

  • Forehead lines: 4-20 units
  • Eyebrow lift: 2-5 units (per side)
  • Frown lines (between the brows / “11s”): 10-30 units
  • Crow’s feet (around the eyes): 8-12 units (per side)
  • Bunny lines (nose wrinkles): 6-10 units
  • Upper lip: 4-8 units
  • Smile lift: 3-6 units
  • Jaw slimming / Masseter muscle: 15-50 units (per side)
  • Neck bands (platysmal): 10-50 units

These numbers are just starting points. Some people may need more or less, depending on their facial anatomy and how natural or dramatic they want the results to be. At Dermacare Medical Aesthetics, our injectors are expertly trained by Dr. Birchall and Dr. Schoemann to examine the facial structure and provide all patients with natural-looking enhancements.

What Is a Syringe of Filler?

A single syringe of filler typically contains 1 milliliter (ml) of product. That’s about 1/5 of a teaspoon — not as much as you might think! Despite the small amount, fillers are designed to be precise and effective when placed in the right areas.

There are many different types of fillers, made with ingredients like hyaluronic acid (HA) — a substance naturally found in your skin that attracts water and provides volume. Brands like JUVEDERM®Restylane®, and Versa each offer a variety of fillers with slightly different textures and purposes (e.g., soft and flexible for lips, firm and lifting for cheeks).

How Much Filler Is Typically Used?

Much like neuromodulators, the amount of filler needed depends on your facial anatomy, goals, and whether it’s your first treatment or a touch-up. Here’s a general guide for common treatment areas:

  • Lips: 0.5-1 syringe for subtle to full enhancement
  • Cheeks: 1-2 syringes per side for contour and lift
  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines): 1-2 syringes
  • Marionette lines (corners of the mouth): 1-2 syringes
  • Chin: 1-2 syringes for projection or reshaping
  • Jawline: 2-4 syringes for definition
  • Under eyes (tear troughs): 0.5-1 syringe
  • Temples: 1-2 syringes per side, depending on volume loss

Keep in mind — subtle, natural results often take more than one syringe, especially if you’re treating multiple areas or have moderate volume loss. Filler is typically built up over time to ensure balance and avoid an overdone look. Other options like Sculptra take more time to show results because they help to replace lost collagen over time.
