Candidates for Microneedling with PRP for Hair Loss
Microneedling with PRP is a great option for those who notice hair thinning in early to moderate stages. You may be considered a good candidate if most of your hair follicles are still intact and relatively functional. This procedure is a great option if you don’t want to resort to extreme measures such as hair transplants.
Most candidates for microneedling with PRP for hair loss have the following signs:
- Receding hairline
- Widening of the hair part
- Thinning crown
- Excess hair shedding
- Weak and brittle hair
- Family history of hair loss
PRP microneedling for hair loss is also an effective choice for men and women who want a natural solution to hair restoration. Since it uses no chemicals or harsh treatments, it’s great for those with relatively sensitive skin.
However, you may not be a good candidate if you have complete baldness with no hair follicles. If you have a blood disorder or are taking blood thinners, then harvesting PRP may be difficult. Consider making an appointment with our Dermacare Medical Aesthetics providers first to determine if you are a candidate.
How Microneedling with PRP for Hair Loss Works
1 PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is a highly concentrated group of human blood cells that can promote healing and new cellular growth.
PRP contains stem cells and growth factors that can stimulate cell growth, tissue repair, collagen growth, and healthy cell production. This can result in longer, fuller, and thicker hair regrowth when injected into the hair follicles.
2 We will draw a small amount of your blood in our office, similar to what you can expect when having blood drawn for lab tests.
The blood is then rapidly spun in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the rest of the blood. Anesthesia is used to minimize discomfort during treatment.
3 The PRP is then injected directly into your scalp with a microneedling device to stimulate renewed blood supply and proper nutrients to your deprived hair follicles.
The microneedling pen allows for deeper penetration of PRP, amplifying the benefits of your hair restoration procedure.
Depending on the area treated, the procedure can take 60 to 90 minutes. Several treatments may be needed for the best possible results, and these treatments should be spaced three to six months apart. Since PRP is derived from your own blood cells, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction or other adverse effects.
PRP Microneedling for Hair Loss Recovery
PRP microneedling for hair loss is not invasive, so the recovery is minimal. You can expect some redness and skin sensitivity post-procedure, which is due to the microneedling. These side effects rarely last more than 24 to 48 hours, so your routine should not be negatively affected.
The PRP treatment shouldn’t come with side effects, as it is your blood that our providers will use. Still, you might feel some sensitivity in the area where the PRP was injected. Any discomfort shouldn’t last more than a few hours.
To keep discomfort to a minimum, wait at least one to two days before putting anything on your head or putting your hair in a ponytail. Showers should also be avoided, as hot water can irritate the scalp. It is important that the PRP is given enough time to settle.
PRP Microneedling for Hair Loss Results
Microneedling with PRP relies on your body’s natural healing response to show results. This means they will develop gradually. You may notice the first signs of improvement after four to six weeks, as your shedding should be reduced. After three months, you may notice some thickening of the hair, since the follicles have had enough time to awaken and grow hair.
Full results are generally noticeable after a year, once the hair has grown. Results can last for more than a year, but it depends on your scalp and the reason for your hair loss.
One treatment is effective to kickstart the process, but for best results you should get three to six treatments with the appropriate length of time between them. If the hair loss is genetic or chronic, you should schedule a PRP microneedling maintenance treatment every year to keep your results.

Will Microneedling with PRP for Hair Loss Be Enough to Restore My Hair?
This depends on the severity of your hair loss. If it’s still in the early stages, the treatment might be enough to stop hair loss and stimulate growth. However, if the hair loss reaches moderate to severe stages, you may want to combine it with treatments such as FoLix laser or Minoxidil.
Is PRP Microneedling for Hair Loss Painful?
Most patients experience some discomfort, but they rarely label it as painful. You may notice a pricking sensation on the scalp and some slight sensitivity after. The feeling should be no worse than a slight sunburn. We can use a topical numbing product if you have particularly sensitive skin.
Can I Style My Hair After Getting Microneedling with PRP for Hair Loss?
You can use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush to gently arrange your hair, but it is important to steer clear of hair styling products for a couple days. It’s best not to touch your hair and scalp for the next one to two days, as your scalp needs enough time to heal.
