Microneedling is a method of skin rejuvenation that works with the body’s own process to produce a smoother, more youthful complexion. Also referred to as collagen induction therapy, the procedure stimulates the production of collagen underneath the skin’s surface to reverse signs of aging and create a healthy, supple appearance. The procedure is performed using topical anesthetic and most patients have little or no downtime after the procedure.
Microneedling is performed using a special device or pen that delivers tiny needle punctures into the dermal layers. The depth of the procedure can be tailored to the needs of each patient and the specific skin concerns to be addressed. These micro injuries jumpstart the body’s healing process, which accelerates cell turnover and collagen production for a natural, healthy result.
Microneedling can be used on nearly any area of the body, although the most common treatment areas are the face, neck and chest. Specific issues that can be treated by microneedling include:
- Fine lines and facial wrinkles
- Shallow scarring, such as acne scars
- Pigmentation irregularities
- Enlarged pores
- Dull, tired skin tone
- Mild to moderate skin laxity
In addition to the basic microneedling procedure, we can add topical serums to the treatment to further enhance your results. The serums are applied to the skin prior to the procedure, which allows for better penetration of those beneficial ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides. Deeper penetration allows the ingredients to work into the dermal layers to create superior results than simply applying the serums topically to the skin.
We will discuss your specific concerns and evaluate the condition of your skin to help you determine whether microneedling is the best choice for you.
Combining Microneedling with PRP
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma, a concentrated group of cells in the blood that contain growth factors and stem cells. These special cells are particularly efficient in promoting healing and cell renewal to produce healthier skin from the inside out. Sometimes called the vampire facial, the combination of microneedling and PRP can produce dramatic, long-lasting skin rejuvenation results.
PRP is obtained by taking a small sample of your blood, just like you have drawn for blood testing purposes. We then place the blood into a centrifuge that separate the platelet rich plasma from the rest of the blood cells. This concentrated PRP can then be applied topically to your skin prior to the microneedling, so the needles can drive the stem cells and growth factors into the deeper layers of dermis where they can have the greatest effect.
How does microneedling work?
A special device delivers 12 micro needles into the skin’s surface at one time. The device moves smoothly across the treatment area, with most procedures taking less than one hour to complete. In some cases, just one pass with the device will be sufficient, while other patients may require a second pass to ensure full coverage.
Does it hurt?
A topical anesthetic is applied to the skin prior to treatment, so our patients find the procedure to be relatively comfortable. Some describe it as sand paper running across the skin, but the device moves too quickly to cause much pain.
What are the side effects?
The skin may be red after treatment, similar to what it looks like with a sunburn. It may also feel slightly tender to the touch. These side effects usually subside on their own within a day or two and are not usually severe enough to impact your activities after your procedure.
When will I see results?
While you may leave our office sporting a healthy glow after your microneedling procedure, the real results will begin to appear in the weeks following treatment. Most of our patients will see significant improvement in the appearance of their skin within 6-8 weeks, which will continue to improve as collagen is produced to support the underlying dermal structure.
