Laser Hair Removal AT DERMACARE MEDICAL AESTHETICS

Healthy hair growth is something that many people, both men and women, aspire to achieve. Full, thick hair is often seen as a symbol of vitality and well-being. However, the benefits of hair growth are most noticeable when it occurs in the right places—such as the scalp or beard. In contrast, unwanted hair growth in other areas can be more of a hassle, which is why permanent hair removal may be a preferable solution.

Dermacare Medical Aesthetics features state-of-the-art laser hair removal. We invest in top-of-the-line technology for the benefit of all our patients, providing them with the best possible results and long-lasting hair reduction.

Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

You may be considered a good candidate for laser hair removal if you have unwanted hair in the following areas:

  • Legs
  • Arms and underarms
  • Back
  • Chest and stomach
  • Bikini line
  • Neck and shoulders
  • Chin and upper lip

Because it needs some contrast to be effective, laser hair removal works best for patients with fair skin and darker hair colors. However, advances in technology and the addition of more wavelengths allow providers like Dermacare to safely and effectively treat a broader range of skin tones and hair shades. Still, keep in mind that the process does not tend to work well on red, grey, or white hair since pigment in these hair colors is minimal.

Laser Hair Removal Recovery

Laser hair removal typically requires little to no recovery time. After the treatment, your skin may feel slightly tender or appear red, similar to a mild sunburn. However, these side effects are usually mild and shouldn’t interfere with your daily activities. In rare cases, hyperpigmentation may occur, but with proper aftercare, this can often be prevented.

You should keep the treatment area away from direct sun exposure for a few days since UV rays can cause complications with newly treated skin. It is also advised that you avoid hot baths, swimming pools, and strenuous exercise on the day of your treatment. Most patients are good to go within a few days after the treatment, with no lasting side effects.

Laser Hair Removal Results

Hair goes through three distinct phases: the growth or anagen phase, the intermediate or catagen phase, and the telogen or shedding phase. The average patient will require at least five to seven treatment sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart in order to target hairs at different stages of the growth cycle. Initial results often appear within three weeks after the first cycle.

However, the number of appointments needed for optimal results and long-term benefits will depend on different factors like hair thickness, the area you want to be treated, and your unique hair growth cycle. Most patients require three to six months to see the full results.

It is also possible that some hairs will be resistant to the treatment, leaving you with results that are not as thorough as you hoped. This is especially the case if your hair has a lighter shade. Further laser hair removal sessions can be scheduled to combat stubborn hairs. Similarly, you can schedule maintenance laser hair removal sessions every few years, as some follicles can regenerate over time.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Laser hair removal is a safe and relatively comfortable procedure and can be performed in the office without the need for anesthesia or recovery time afterward. However, we do provide patients with a topical anesthetic before treatment if there is concern over discomfort or a particularly sensitive area will be addressed.

Do I Need to Prep the Skin Before Laser Hair Removal?

To ensure the effectiveness of laser hair removal, you should not wax or pluck your hair within two to four weeks before the treatment. For the laser to be able to damage the follicle, there needs to be hair in it in the first place. At the same time, the hair coming out of the follicle should not be too long, because it can lead to a burning sensation and take the focus off the follicle. Ideally, you should simply shave the area around 24 hours before your treatment.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

For the most part, laser hair removal is considered permanent, and hair should not grow back once it has been removed. That said, there is a chance that some of the follicles will partially survive the laser and begin regenerating. It can take years until they start producing new hairs, and when they do, you should consider getting a maintenance treatment.

Can I Get Laser Hair Removal If I Have Dark Skin?

Advancements in technology have made it possible for those with dark skin to get laser hair removal, but the wavelength should be chosen carefully. You might need to go through more sessions than normal, so you don’t damage the skin but still get an effect on the follicles.
