Chemical peels are an effective way to provide full skin exfoliation and treat a variety of specific skin concerns. One of the greatest advantages to these treatments is the ability of the provider to tailor the peel formulation to the precise needs of each patient. To help you know which type of peel might work best for you, Dermacare Laser & Skin Care Clinics offers a list of the chemicals commonly found in these formulations and their benefits.

AHAs and BHAs

Alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxy acids are often used in light peels, also sometimes referred to as “lunchtime” peels. These include glycolic acid, malic acid and salicylic acid, which can be used separately or together in a single peel formulation. These ingredients offer subtle results with the ability to do the following:

  • Smooth out rough skin texture
  • Minimize fine lines and acne scarring
  • Reduce the appearance of sun spots
  • Treat other types of sun damage
  • Produce a healthy, radiant glow

Light peels are comfortable procedures that require no downtime afterward, like our SkinMedica Illumnize or Vitalize peels. Most patients opt for a series of light chemical peels to achieve their full results.

Trichloroacetic Acid

TCA is a popular choice in chemicals for medium peels. Another option is a higher concentration of glycolic acid than you would find in a more superficial peel. These peels remove more layers of skin than a light peel, which achieves more dramatic skin rejuvenation. TCA peels can be used to treat the following concerns:

  • Age spots and freckles
  • Fine lines and deeper wrinkles
  • Moderate skin discoloration
  • More significant sun damage
  • Some precancerous growths

At Dermacare, our TCA peel is the VI Peel. While it does not contain TCA, another moderately aggressive peel we offer with similar benefits and side effects is the SkinMedica Rejuvenize peel. Both of these peels are not as comfortable as a light peel and patients typically experience some burning or stinging when the peel is applied. After treatment, you skin is likely to be pink, itchy and slightly swollen, which causes many patients to remain home for a few days to allow for the initial healing to take place in private. There is also more flaking and peeling after one of these treatments – a sign the chemicals did their job and will reveal softer, smoother skin within about one week after the procedure.

At Dermacare Laser & Skin Care Clinics, we offer a wide array of chemical peels to suit the needs and aesthetic goals of all of our patients. Our peel menu includes a selection of the top-of-the-line SkinMedica peels and the VI peel, which can each be mixed precisely for each patient, ranging from light to moderately aggressive. Our professional team will work with you to determine the peel treatment that will give you the best possible results.
