The Art of Freezing Fat
CoolSculpting, which was originally introduced to the U.S. in 2010, uses a unique technology known as cryolipolysis to sculpt problem areas of the body like the midsection and thighs. Cryolipolysis cools the treatment area to a temperature cold enough to freeze fat cells without damaging surrounding skin and tissue. The frozen fat cells crystalize so they can be eliminated through the natural systems of the body.
CoolSculpting delivers controlled cooling to the treatment area via an applicator that combines the cooling with gentle suction. There is no need for anesthesia prior to treatment and recovery time is almost non-existent. The original procedure took about 60 minutes to complete, but with the new CoolAdvantage applicators, the procedure will only take about 35 minutes. Patients will see results develop in the months following treatment. The results of CoolSculpting are permanent, since fat cells are completely destroyed and eliminated.
Candidates for Cryolipolysis
The best candidates for CoolSculpting treatments are those that follow a healthy diet and exercise program, but have isolated areas of fat that have not responded to their healthy efforts. CoolSculpting can address any of the following problem spots:
- Muffin top
- Love handles
- Abdominal bulge
- Upper and lower back
- Inner and outer thighs
A new applicator known as the CoolMini also allows the procedure to be used on smaller areas like the chin and underarms.
Because this procedure is non-invasive, it can be a good choice for patients that would like to reduce certain areas of fat but do not want to undergo the discomfort and recovery time of surgery. Patients that are not good candidates for surgery due to health concerns or other reasons may also be able to consider CoolSculpting as a safe and viable alternative for meeting their body contouring goals.
The “Cool” Advantage
CoolAdvantage, which was just introduced to the CoolSculpting family earlier this year, brings another element to the cryolipolysis process. The three new applicators included in the CoolAdvantage package allow for even lower temperatures to be used on the treatment area, making for a faster procedure. Patients can achieve the same stellar results they get with the original CoolSculpting treatment, but in just 35 minutes instead of a full hour.
Researchers also found that the new applicator design with the CoolAdvantage led to an even more comfortable procedure for patients. While the original CoolSculpting procedure is considered very tolerable for most patients, these same patients had a 45-percent improvement in comfort level when receiving CoolAdvantage treatments. In fact, 85 percent of the test subjects in the initial clinical research preferred CoolAdvantage treatments over the traditional CoolSculpting procedure due to reduced time and greater comfort.
Applicator Options
The applicators used for CoolAdvantage also offer the benefit of covering a larger treatment area with every application. In addition, the new applicators are ergonomically designed to fit better over specific treatment areas, which contributes to the greater level of comfort and provides even smoother results. The three different applicators include:
- CoolCore Advantage – provides a contour that works well on the abdominal area
- CoolFit Advantage – allows for treatment on the inner thighs and other vertical areas
- CoolCurve + Advantage – offers a smaller curve designed for the flanks and outer thighs
Each applicator simply attaches to the device to deliver the same level of cooling to any treatment area.
What to Expect
CoolSculpting treatments are performed right in the Dermacare office on an outpatient basis. There is no anesthesia needed prior to treatment, the area is simply marked after the patient gets into a comfortable position. The applicator is placed onto the skin and gentle suction pulls the skin to allow for better penetration of the cooling.
Most patients do not experience any discomfort during a CoolSculpting treatment, particularly if CoolAdvantage applicators are used. Most patients are able to read, nap or answer emails while the treatment is performed. After treatment, you can return to your daily activities right away. The skin in the treatment area may be slightly red, but this side effect will subside on its own within a day or two. There should not be any significant discomfort after the CoolSculpting procedure.
Results by the Numbers
The results of CoolSculpting are not seen right away. It takes time for the treated fat cells to be eliminated by the body, so you will see your results develop gradually over time. While many patients will get full results after just a single treatment session, others may decide to undergo a second treatment 2-3 months after the first for even greater fat reduction.
Clinical studies have shown each CoolSculpting treatment session will result in a 20-25 percent fat reduction in the treatment area. Once the results become fully evident, which usually takes around three months, the results will be permanent as long as you maintain a healthy weight. If you gain some weight after treatment, remaining fat cells can expand and alter your results.
