There are a number of options in skin rejuvenation treatments today, which can make it difficult for you to know which treatment will provide you with the best possible results. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are two effective exfoliating procedures that offer excellent results, depending on the specific concerns you want addressed. Which of these tried and true treatments is the right choice for you?
Chemical peels use chemical solutions to remove the outer layer of skin cells, leaving softer, more youthful skin underneath. These solutions can be customized to the unique needs of each patient, with varying depths that offer anything from a superficial rejuvenation to a deeper treatment that reduces signs of aging and skin imperfections. Chemical peels tend to be seen as therapeutic as well as aesthetic, treating a vast array of skin conditions and concerns.
Because chemical peels are more therapeutic in nature, they also may require a downtime after the procedure. In most cases, recovery takes four days or less. After the peel, you skin will begin to flake and scale, which may make you uncomfortable going out in public for a number of days. The skin may also be red and sensitive during that time. On the flip side, results of chemical peels may be more dramatic and long-lasting than those achieved with microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion is considered a skin polishing treatment that removes dead, dry outer skin cells, reduces pores and gives the skin a refreshed appearance. Crystal-free microdermabrasion can be safely used on nearly all skin types and may reduce the appearance of fine lines, shallow scarring and pigmentation marks. The procedure also stimulates regeneration of skin cells and the body’s own collagen production, which can lead to longer-lasting results.
Microdermabrasion depth can also be adjusted for the unique needs of each patient, but the treatment is not as customizable as a chemical peel. However, the procedure also does not require any downtime; patients often return to work and other activities as soon as treatment is over. Most patients that get good results from microdermabrasion will come in at regular intervals for treatment to maintain positive results.
