How SmartSkin CO2® Works
SmartSkin CO2® is referred to as an “ablative” laser, which means its role is to remove the outermost layer of your skin. The treatment works by delivering a series of tiny microscopic laser beams to the skin. This fractionated energy penetrates the skin to clear away old and damaged skin cells, triggering a regeneration process.
That said, unlike traditional CO2 lasers that target the entire top layer, SmartSkin CO2® delivers its action in fractions. This means that the small beams will create microscopic columns in the skin, but the rest of it will be left intact. This promotes faster healing than your average laser, decreasing overall discomfort.
The body’s natural healing process then builds new healthy cells to take their place. The laser also stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin deep within your skin, giving you a more youthful appearance. Over the next few months, the new collagen will settle and mature, improving the skin’s elasticity while reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Right after the treatment, your skin can feel warm and appear to be sunburned. You may also experience some swelling, which is completely normal. A stinging sensation can also appear within the first one to two days, but you can easily manage it with some prescribed ointments or cold compresses.
After about three days, you might also notice some flaking and peeling, depending on the intensity of the procedure. This is a normal reaction to your body replacing the damaged layer with a new one. Moisturizing cream can help manage any itchiness or dryness that you may experience. Make sure not to pick at the scabs or scrub in the first few days, as this can lead to scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The damaged skin should eventually peel off on its own.
In a few days, you should begin to notice healthier-looking skin and a more even complexion. Over time, collagen will regenerate and restore the supporting structure of your skin, giving you the smooth skin you are looking for. To ensure proper skin regeneration, steer clear of wearing makeup or touching your face within the next one to three weeks, as your skin is still relatively sensitive.

The SmartSkin CO2® treatment begins acting right away, but you may not see much improvement due to the recovery side effects. First signs of improvement may become visible after one week or two, once the outer layer peels off. Your complexion should appear brighter, with fewer pigmentation spots, and fine lines should become reduced in intensity.
The quality of your skin will keep improving over the next few months, with the final results showing in three to six months. The skin should become firmer and tighter, and deeper wrinkles should no longer be as visible. With proper skin care and protection, results often last years.

Will It Hurt to Get the SmartSkin CO2® Treatment?
A topical anesthetic is generally applied before the procedure, so there is minimal discomfort during the procedure. Some patients report feeling heat and tingling as the laser scanner moves across their faces. The entire face can be treated in less than 30 minutes.
