XEOMIN®

AT DERMACARE MEDICAL AESTHETICS

Dynamic wrinkles are very common as people get older, especially after their 30s. These lines form when facial muscles move again and again from smiling, frowning, or raising the eyebrows. Over time, the skin can crease, and lines can start to stay even when the face is at rest. This can make you look older or more tired than you feel.

Injectable treatments like XEOMIN® are a good option to reduce excessive muscle contractions, and our providers at Dermacare Medical Aesthetics can help you achieve a softer look.

Candidates for XEOMIN®

Candidates for XEOMIN® are usually healthy adults past their mid-20s or 30s, who have developed dynamic wrinkles in the upper area of their face. This includes crow’s feet, forehead lines, and smile lines, which deepen when you make any facial expressions.

You may also be considered a good candidate if you want to go for a “cleaner,” more purified neurotoxin compared to BOTOX® Cosmetic. XEOMIN® is made in a special way that removes extra proteins. This leaves only the active ingredient that does the work. Because of this, the body is less likely to build up a resistance over time, which helps the treatment stay effective.

Consider a XEOMIN® treatment if you plan on getting injectables in the long term or have developed a resistance to BOTOX® Cosmetic. You should be in good health, with no active skin infections, and no allergy to botulinum toxin. Also, you should have realistic expectations about the procedure, as the injectable only stops contractions without changing the skin’s actual quality.

You may want to reschedule your XEOMIN® treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, to be on the safe side. If you have breathing problems or swallowing issues, you may not be considered a good candidate, depending on the treated area. Talk with our providers to determine if this procedure is right for you.

How XEOMIN® Works

XEOMIN® works similarly to BOTOX® Cosmetic, a popular neuromodulator used to address dynamic wrinkles. A neurotoxin based on botulinum toxin type A gets injected into the skin, blocking the nerve signals telling the muscles to contract. This temporarily relaxes the targeted muscles, and the absence of contractions causes the skin to smooth out.

However, XEOMIN® is different from BOTOX® Cosmetic. The injectable contains incobotulinumtoxinA, which is considered “cleaner” compared to onabotulinumtoxinA (the base for BOTOX® Cosmetic).

XEOMIN® uses a process called “XTRACT Technology®,” which removes the unnecessary proteins. This reduces the chances of immune reactions (unless you’re specifically allergic to botulinum toxin type A).

The procedure lasts an average of 10 to 20 minutes in the office, depending on how many areas you want treated. It’s usually well-tolerated and does not require anesthesia, but a local numbing agent can be used if you’re sensitive to needles.

Recovery

XEOMIN® is an injectable product, and the recovery is similar to every other injection. Most of the discomfort comes from the needle prick, although some tenderness may appear as the formula settles underneath the skin. You can expect mild swelling or redness over the next couple of hours, along with some bruising at the injection site for the next few days.

Most patients can return to their daily routine right away, although it’s best to stay away from excessive heat or sweat-inducing activities. This could lead to irritation and prolonged inflammation, so steer clear of hot showers, baths, or extensive exercise.

Refrain from rubbing or touching the area for the next couple of days. Not only do you risk bacteria if you touch the injection wound, but it could also cause the XEOMIN® to migrate into unintended regions. However, you may gently move your facial muscles, as it helps the formula spread evenly.

 Results

XEOMIN® results appear after the muscle movement has stopped enough to allow the skin to soften. You might notice some initial improvement after the first three to four days, with the wrinkles slightly softening as the muscles relax.

Full effects settle after seven to 14 days, based on whether the skin is used to the formula or not. The skin should have a natural-looking smoothness without appearing frozen, as the formula allows you to keep your facial expressions.

Results are temporary, but usually last an average of three to four months. After that, the muscle activity returns, as the immune system gradually expels the XEOMIN®. You may still see some of its effects once you hit the six-month mark.

To maintain the results, it’s best to schedule maintenance treatments and engage in proper skincare. Sunblock is essential, as it protects the skin from UV damage and prevents further fine line formation.

How Often Should I Get XEOMIN® Treatments?

You should schedule your XEOMIN® treatments three to four months apart from one another, although the exact time depends on your metabolism. If yours is faster, then you may need more treatments. Regardless, the intervals between injections should not be shorter than six weeks.

Yes, although the interval may depend on the type of treatment you opt for. If you’re going for laser or skin resurfacing treatments, you should schedule those first and get your XEOMIN® injections after. That said, if you’re going for dermal fillers, you can get them both during the same appointment if you want to.

The purified formula of XEOMIN® makes it less likely to develop resistance, as it happens with BOTOX® Cosmetic, but it’s not impossible. This is why providers at Dermacare recommend you don’t get the injections too frequently or in high dosages.

Makeup should also be avoided for the next 48 hours, as the skin should stay clear and pressure-free. At most, you can apply moisturizer and sunblock after 24 hours, but keep the movements gentle.
