BOTOX in San Diego
AT DERMACARE MEDICAL AESTHETICS
Dermacare Medical Aesthetics offers BOTOX® injections at five locations across San Diego County and Orange County, including Mission Valley, Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and San Juan Capistrano. Under the medical direction of Dr. Jeff Birchall, MD, our team of experienced injectors has performed thousands of BOTOX® treatments, helping men and women achieve a refreshed, more rested appearance without surgery or downtime.
Every facial expression you make — a smile, a squint, a frown — works the same muscles, repeated thousands of times each day. Over time, those movements leave a permanent record. Fine lines that once only appeared mid-expression gradually become fixed features, visible whether your face is moving or not.
BOTOX® is the most requested treatment at all five of our locations, and it has been for years. Patients come in for everything from forehead creases and crow’s feet to jaw clenching, excessive sweating, and chronic migraines. Our team takes the time to understand your face and your goals before recommending a treatment plan.
Allergan Platinum Plus Provider
Dermacare Medical Aesthetics holds Allergan Platinum Plus status, one of the highest designations in the Allergan partner program. This recognition reflects the volume and consistency of BOTOX® treatments performed across our San Diego County locations and Allergan’s standards for clinical training and patient outcomes. Very few practices nationwide achieve this level.
How Does Botox Work?
BOTOX® contains botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein that temporarily blocks the nerve signals responsible for triggering muscle contractions. When the targeted muscle stops contracting, the skin above it relaxes and smooths out.
The treatment does not eliminate your ability to make expressions. It reduces the muscle activity responsible for creating lines in the first place. In experienced hands, results look natural, not frozen.
What Does BOTOX® Treat?
BOTOX® is most effective for expression-driven lines, known as dynamic wrinkles. These develop in areas where muscles contract repeatedly over years, most commonly in the upper face.
Common cosmetic treatment areas include:
- Horizontal forehead creases
- Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows (the “elevens”)
- Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
- Bunny lines at the top of the nose
- A gummy smile, where the upper lip rises to expose gum tissue
- Neck bands (platysmal bands)
- Chin dimpling
BOTOX® is also an effective medical treatment for:
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Chronic headaches and migraines
- Muscle spasms
Masseter BOTOX® for Jaw Reduction and Teeth Grinding
One of the fastest-growing uses of BOTOX® is treatment of the masseter muscle, the large muscle on either side of the jaw responsible for chewing and clenching. When the masseter is injected, it gradually reduces in size over several weeks. The result is a softer, less angular jawline and meaningful relief from the muscle tension caused by grinding and clenching (bruxism).
Masseter BOTOX® typically requires more units than standard cosmetic areas, and the full slimming effect may take two or three treatment cycles to become fully visible. Many patients also report a significant reduction in jaw soreness and morning headaches after treatment.
Not sure whether BOTOX® is the right approach for your concern? Dr. Birchall and our providers will assess your goals during a consultation and recommend the best treatment plan, whether that is BOTOX® alone or a combination with other injectables.
Am I a Candidate for Botox?
BOTOX® is FDA-approved for adults between 18 and 65 who are in general good health. It’s safe for all skin tones and types. Many patients also choose to start BOTOX® preventatively — before deep lines form — to slow the progression of wrinkles over time.
BOTOX® may not be appropriate if you have:
- A known allergy to botulinum toxin or any of BOTOX®’s ingredients
- A diagnosed nerve or muscle disorder (such as ALS or myasthenia gravis)
- Active infection at the intended treatment site
- A history of difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Recent or upcoming surgery
- Current pregnancy or breastfeeding
Your comprehensive consultation with Dr. Birchall will surface any contraindications before treatment begins. If BOTOX® isn’t the right fit, our team will suggest appropriate alternatives to help you reach your goals safely.
Can BOTOX® Be Used Preventatively?
Yes, and it is increasingly common. Many patients begin BOTOX® before deep lines have formed, using treatment to slow the progression of wrinkles over time.
The reasoning is straightforward: a muscle that is regularly relaxed creases the overlying skin less, giving lines fewer opportunities to deepen.
Preventative BOTOX® has become especially popular among patients in their late 20s and 30s who want to stay ahead of the aging process rather than reverse it later.
What to Expect at Your BOTOX® Appointment
BOTOX® appointments at Dermacare are quick, typically completed in 15 to 30 minutes. Rather than targeting wrinkles directly, our injectors focus on the underlying muscles responsible for creating them, placing injections precisely to relax muscle activity at the source.
The procedure involves a series of small injections using a fine needle. Most patients tolerate the treatment comfortably, with minimal discomfort. There is no anesthesia and no recovery period.

When Will I See Results?
Results typically begin to appear within one to three days of treatment, with the full effect visible at seven to fourteen days.
BOTOX® injections last anywhere from three to four months as the body slowly restores the nerve’s function to allow for muscle contraction once again.
You can maintain your updated appearance by repeating your BOTOX® injections every few months. Some patients find that with regular injections, they can begin to go longer between treatments as muscles begin to “learn” to relax.
BOTOX® Recovery: What to Avoid After Treatment
There’s no downtime after BOTOX®, but following a few simple aftercare guidelines helps protect your results and minimize side effects:
Don’t lie down or bend over for more than a few seconds in the first three hours post-treatment — this prevents the formula from migrating and reduces bruising risk.
Avoid exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and sunbathing for 24 hours. Heat raises blood pressure and increases the likelihood of bruising; sweat can irritate the injection sites before they fully close.
Some patients experience mild swelling or bruising around the injection sites. This typically resolves within a few days.
For any unexpected or severe reaction, contact your provider right away.
Understanding Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles
BOTOX® is most effective in treating specific kinds of wrinkles, commonly known as “dynamic wrinkles.” Dynamic wrinkles form as the result of repeated facial expressions, such as squinting, smiling, or laughing.
Despite being the natural result of our vibrant and jovial facial expressions, for many people, they are a source of self-consciousness, and a sign that they are aging that can make them feel older than they actually are.
While these symptoms can begin to appear gradually, they can quickly deepen, becoming permanent. At this stage, many people might turn to doctors to help them restore a youthful appearance.
Dynamic wrinkles most frequently occur in the face’s upper areas, in places such as:
- Creases across the forehead
- The vertical line between the eyebrows (i.e., frown lines or “elevens”)
- Fine lines at the corner of the eyes (i.e., crow’s feet)
It’s important to understand the difference between dynamic wrinkles and their counterpart, static wrinkles. While dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated stress on the skin due to repeated muscle movements, static lines tend to form due to collagen depletion, another natural and inevitable result of aging.
As less and less collagen is available to the skin as we age, the underlying structures that give the skin its tightness and tone tend to weaken, leading to loose and sagging skin as well as lines and wrinkles.
The location of these symptoms is also different. Most of these aging signs tend to occur in the mid or lower portion of the face, around the nose, mouth, and chin.
While BOTOX® will not improve these kinds of concerns, you can improve them with alternative injectable treatments that you can have along with BOTOX® during the same treatment session.Dr. Birchall and our Dermacare staff can help you select the ideal combination of treatments to help you achieve your facial rejuvenation goals.
BOTOX® for Men
BOTOX® is equally effective for men, and we see a growing number of male patients across all of our locations. The treatment approach is the same — targeting the muscles responsible for lines and wrinkles — though our injectors take into account the differences in male facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. Men typically have stronger, larger facial muscles, which can influence both dosing and placement.
Common treatment areas for men include the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet. Masseter BOTOX® for jaw definition is also increasingly popular.

Will My Face Look Natural After BOTOX® Cosmetic?
There is a common misconception that BOTOX® will make you appear frozen, unnatural, or plastic. However, that’s just what it is: a misconception. BOTOX® relaxes the muscles in the treatment area, but this does not mean your face will look frozen or unnatural.
In the hands of an educated, experienced provider, BOTOX® results look very natural. You can look years younger and leave people wondering what your secret is.
In some cases, inexperienced practitioners perform BOTOX® and bring on abnormal or even disastrous results. The media also tends to highlight celebrities who have had too much BOTOX® or filler injected into their face, which a reputable cosmetic practitioner would refuse to do. This is why choosing your BOTOX® provider wisely is essential to achieving the natural results you want.
How Much Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Cost?
The total cost of your treatment will depend on how many units are needed to achieve your ideal results.
At your personalized consultation, we can evaluate your concerns and provide you with the specific price of your BOTOX®.
What Are the Benefits of Choosing a Platinum Plus Level BOTOX® Cosmetic Provider?
Having Platinum Plus status with Allergan means a provider has extensive experience with Allergan products like BOTOX®. Platinum Plus providers generally have the highest level of expertise with BOTOX® at Dermacare, meaning they are skilled in its administration and know how to achieve the best results for various patients while avoiding unwanted side effects.
Dermacare Medical Aesthetics in San Diego County and Orange County is a Platinum Plus level provider of BOTOX®, and our skilled injectors understand how BOTOX® works with a person’s facial anatomy to achieve ideal results.
Can BOTOX® Cosmetic Be Used for Preventative Purposes?
For some patients, BOTOX® can also be used to prevent the formation of wrinkles in the first place.
If you have noticed deepening lines when you make certain facial expressions, BOTOX® can reduce the stress your muscles have on the skin in these key areas. This way, it prevents new wrinkles from forming and keeps your existing lines from being etched even further into your skin.
This injectable treatment offers patients multiple benefits and the chance to keep invasive procedures at bay for a long time to come.
