Natural Hand Renewal
AT DERMACARE MEDICAL AESTHETICS
The hands often show the signs of aging first on your body. The skin loses its tone and elasticity, and the fatty tissues on the back of the hands diminish, causing veins and tendons to look more prominent as you age.
However, patients now have the option of reversing the signs of aging on their hands by using natural hand renewal. This treatment uses your own fat cells to restore youthful fullness to your hands, making them look years younger. Men and women who want to restore their hand smoothness should consider Dermacare Medical Aesthetics for their natural hand renewal treatment.
Candidates for Natural Hand Renewal
Natural hand renewal is a great option for men and women who have lost volume in their hands and want a natural alternative to synthetic fillers. Since it uses your own fat cells to add extra volume, natural hand renewal is a suitable choice for those who are allergy-prone or want an organic approach to hand fillers.
Consider getting natural hand renewal if you meet the following conditions:
- Your tendons, veins, and bones are visible as a result of aging or weight loss
- You lost significant volume on the back of your hands
- The skin is crepey, thin, and wrinkly, making the hand look older than the face
- You are sensitive to synthetic fillers and want a natural alternative
- You have enough donor fat in areas such as the flanks or abdomen
- You want results that last longer than three to six months
The ideal candidate is in good health and has no issues that could compromise the healing. Non-smokers are the best candidates, since smoking affects both healing and the fat survival rate.
How Natural Hand Renewal Works
Natural hand renewal uses the latest advances in laser-assisted liposuction and fat transfer techniques. Through laser-assisted liposuction, Dr. Birchall will gently remove fat cells from other parts of the body. In most cases, this will be from either the abdomen or the hip area. This innovative process is gentle enough to keep fat cells intact and viable during the removal process so that they are ready for immediate transfer.
Once the fat cells have been successfully harvested and purified, Dr. Birchall will reinject them into your hands during the natural hand renewal procedure. The fat is distributed precisely using a cannula, which is a blunt-tipped needle. Only healthy, viable fat is isolated for the reinjection, as this fat offers higher chances of survival.
Natural hand renewal provides patients with long-lasting, natural-looking results. This procedure also:
- Makes hands look years younger
- Minimizes the appearance of veins and tendons
- Restores fatty tissues on the back of the hands
- Does not use synthetic fillers
Natural Hand Renewal is performed as an outpatient procedure, and only a small amount of fat is necessary for the transfer. The procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia.
Recovery
Natural hand rejuvenation is a procedure with a low potential for downtime. Since you’re using your own fat to add volume to the hands, there is no chance of having an allergic reaction. However, you can expect to see a series of temporary side effects in both the donor and target areas.
Mild swelling, redness, and bruising are the most common symptoms in both areas. Some pain is common as well, but it’s nothing that can’t be improved with OTC painkillers. The hands may also look slightly overfilled at first, but this is normal. The doctor will purposely overfill the area, since the body will naturally absorb around 20-40% of the injected fat. Some patients experience numbness, but this typically does not last longer than a couple of days.
Swelling should subside in both the hands and the donor area after two to four weeks. You may want to avoid strenuous exercise or excessive hand movements during this time. Additionally, keep your hands elevated as often as possible to minimize swelling. Dr. Birchall may ask you to wear a compression garment in the donor area to minimize the swelling and help it heal.
Results
Unlike other dermal fillers, natural hand renewal restores fullness to your hands with a process that is completely natural. In addition to greatly reducing the risk of infection and complications, this leads to more natural-looking results than synthetic cosmetic injectables and collagen fillers. The results of this procedure are long-lasting and potentially permanent, whereas other fillers require frequent maintenance visits, generally as often as every six to nine months.
Most people notice the first results right after their procedure, although the full results are concealed by the swelling and overfilling. However, the veins, bones, and tendons will immediately look less prominent, and the skin should feel smoother. Once you get past the first three weeks or so, you will start noticing the results.
The contour of the hands starts emerging after the first month, and most of the transferred fat that did not survive will be reabsorbed at this time. The fat that did survive will have its permanent blood supply at this point and become a living part of your tissue. Unless you drastically lose or gain weight, your results should last for a long time.

Will the Fat Shift or Migrate With Time?
Yes and no. The fat only risks migrating or shifting if you apply significant pressure or trauma to the hands right after the procedure. However, once it establishes its own blood supply (which takes about a month), it becomes like any other fat and will remain stable and no longer migrate.
How Soon Can I Resume My Usual Activities?
For the most part, you can resume light activities after about one to two days. However, you should avoid heavy lifting, gripping, and other strenuous activities for a week. You may also feel discomfort in the donor site for a few days, so limit any intense activities for about two weeks.
Will I Need to Have Multiple Treatments?
This depends on your level of volume loss, your goals, and how the body maintains the transferred fat. Doctor Birchall purposely overfills to avoid multiple visits, but you may return after a couple of months for touch-ups.
