Affecting up to 50 million Americans, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Acne can rear its ugly head in the form of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and other blemishes commonly found on the face, neck, chest, and back. While many people associate acne with puberty in their teenage years, adult acne is also prevalent well into the 30s, 40s, and even 50s for many people. Some of the causes of adult acne can include hormonal changes, product reactions, stress, medication side effects, and genetics.

Depending on your unique situation and the severity of your acne, we can utilize one or a combination of a few of our treatment options below to help minimize the appearance of your acne.

Dermacare’s Medical Grade Products

We have our own line of premier skincare products, which includes glycolic and salicylic cleansers, medicated acne wash, treatment pads, benzoyl peroxide gel, and much more. Over time, these products can help unclog pores, dry out pimples, and exfoliate the skin, exposing smooth, clear, and radiant skin.

Facials & Chemical Peels

Medical-grade facials use ingredients specifically geared toward acne-prone skin. These treatments are comfortable and relaxing and when performed regularly, can result in a significant improvement to the appearance and health of the skin. The facials provide deep cleansing and targeted treatments to reduce bacteria and pore-clogging substances on the skin.

More intense than a facial in many cases, chemical peels can also be customized to acne sufferers by simply selecting the formulations that work best with oily skin types. Chemical peels are exfoliating treatments that remove outer skin layers, leaving softer, clearer skin underneath. The depth of the peel, as well as the ingredients in the peel, can be tailored to the unique needs of each patient, allowing us to create a procedure that will give you the results you are looking for.

Deep Pore Treatment

In addition to facials and chemical peels, our medically trained and licensed estheticians offer deep pore treatments, which take about 60 minutes to complete. The treatment includes the application of a detox gel to soften the skin, acne extractions, and a clarifying mask at the end. For sensitive skin, we can use a soothing mask instead.

Most of this treatment involves the professional extractions of blackheads, pustules, and pimples. Extractions are the process of clearing clogged pores of excess sebum, dead skin cells, dirt, and oil. When done incorrectly or at home, you can actually cause your acne to worsen or be left with infections and scarring. This is why we advise our patients to never pop their own pimples or squeeze their blackheads. Our estheticians have the appropriate tools to safely complete your acne extractions for you. It may take several treatment sessions for all extractions to be completed.

BLU-U® Blue Light Therapy

FDA-approved blue light therapy uses light energy to destroy acne-causing bacteria, without damaging the surrounding skin and tissue. Blue light therapy is often recommended for moderate acne conditions and can be used on patients of all ages. The procedure takes between 15 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area. Many patients compare the BLU-U® to a bright, warm lamp. Most people can enjoy optimal results after being treated twice per week for five weeks. We recommend bringing your headphones and listening to music, podcasts, or audio books to pass the time.

Levulan® PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT)

For more severe, cystic acne, PhotoDynamic Therapy is a non-invasive procedure that can be more effective than other treatments for severe cases of acne. During the procedure, Levulan®, a naturally-occurring compound is topically applied to the treatment area before a BLU-U® treatment. The Levulan® medication is activated by the blue light, then it is absorbed into the “bad” cells (where the oil glands and bacteria are). Combining Levulan® with the light therapy ensures precision during the procedure. Only the skin to be treated is targeted by the blue light, while the rest of the skin and tissue remain untouched. This allows for a shorter recovery period after treatment, since only focused areas of the skin are affected by the light therapy. It also ensures a more efficient treatment, with faster results than other types of acne therapy. It is advised to stay out of the sun for at least two days following treatment. Peeling may occur and continue for up to four days, as treated skin cells flake off, leaving smoother, clearer skin underneath.
