Botox in Mission Viejo, CA

AT DERMACARE MEDICAL AESTHETICS

botox patient

Most people think about Botox for months before they book it. They read about it, price it out, ask a friend who’s had it done, and somewhere along the way start worrying about walking out with a face that doesn’t move.

Botox at Dermacare is $14 a unit with our nurse injectors and $16 with a physician. A typical forehead treatment takes around 20 units, so roughly $280. Our closest clinic to Mission Viejo is in San Juan Capistrano, six miles south down the I-5.

The rest of this page covers what the treatment does, who it suits, what happens at the appointment, and what to expect in the weeks afterward.

What Botox Costs in Mission Viejo

Botox at Dermacare is $14 per unit with our nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses, or $16 per unit with a physician injector. Members take 15% off, which brings those to $11.90 and $13.60.

Pricing works by the unit instead of by the area, for a practical reason. Faces aren’t built the same way. Someone with a strong frown muscle might need 25 units to soften lines that another patient softens with 15. A flat rate per area would overcharge one of them and under-dose the other.

Treatment Pricing Estimates
Area Typical units At $14/unit At $16/unit
Forehead lines ~20 ~$280 ~$320
Frown lines (the "11s") ~20 ~$280 ~$320
Crow's feet (both sides) ~24 ~$336 ~$384
Full upper face ~64 ~$896 ~$1,024

Who Performs Your Botox Injections

Every Botox treatment at Dermacare is performed by a licensed medical professional under the medical direction of Jeff Birchall, M.D. You choose whether that’s a physician, a nurse practitioner, a physician assistant, or a registered nurse, and the price follows your choice.

Injecting well is an anatomy problem first. The same 20 units placed two millimeters apart produce two different faces, which is why patients ask about their injector’s background far more than they used to.

Dr. Birchall is board certified and has spent more than 25 years in aesthetic medicine. He belongs to the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and the American Association of Aesthetic Medicine, and the injector team he’s built carries more than 60 years of combined experience across our five Southern California locations.

Dermacare also holds Black Diamond provider status with Allergan for BOTOX® and JUVÉDERM®, which places the practice in the top 100 of more than 30,000 providers nationally. That status reflects volume, and volume by itself is only part of the picture. What it means in practice is that our injectors work on these muscles every day, and a good deal of the skill in this treatment lives in that repetition.

If you’re worried about looking frozen, say so at your consultation. A natural result comes from placing fewer units precisely, and your injector needs to know how much movement you want to keep. It’s the most common question we get, and it’s a reasonable one to ask.

Jeff Birchall, M.D.

What Botox Treats, and What It Won’t

Botox softens the lines that appear when your face moves. It won’t fill lines that are still visible when your face is completely still.

Check it in a mirror. Let your face go slack and see what’s left. Lines that disappear when you stop moving are dynamic, and Botox handles those well. Lines still sitting there when nothing is moving have settled into the skin itself, and those respond better to dermal fillers, microneedling, or laser resurfacing.

Plenty of people need some combination of the two, and finding that out is a normal outcome of a consultation.

We commonly treat forehead lines, the frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet, a gummy smile, downturned mouth corners, chin dimpling, neck bands, and the masseter muscle along the jaw.

If what’s bothering you turns out to be volume loss instead of movement, Botox isn’t the answer. You’ll hear that at the consultation, before you’ve paid for something that was never going to help.

Who Is and Isn’t a Good Candidate

Botox suits healthy adults over 18 whose lines come from facial movement and who want them softened.

We won’t treat you if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. The safety data to support it doesn’t exist, so waiting is the honest position.

Certain neuromuscular conditions rule it out as well, including myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and ALS, because neuromodulators can deepen muscle weakness. An active skin infection where the needle would go means postponing until it clears. A known allergy to anything in the product rules it out entirely.

Two other situations call for a conversation first. If you’ve had a heavy or frozen result somewhere before, bring it up, because the fix is almost always dosing and placement rather than a different brand. And if you’re hoping Botox will lift skin that has genuinely started to sag, it won’t, and a conversation about skin tightening or surgical options will get you further.

What Happens at Your Appointment

A first Botox appointment is short, and the injections themselves take only a few minutes. You can drive yourself home afterward and go straight back to work.

Your injector will ask what’s bothering you and then watch your face move. Raising your brows, frowning, and smiling shows which muscles are pulling and how hard. Your dosing follows what they see in person, since no standard chart can account for your particular muscle pattern.

The needle is very fine. Most people describe a quick pinch and are surprised by how fast the whole thing is over. If you’re nervous about the discomfort, say so and ask what your injector can offer to take the edge off.

Afterward you may see small raised bumps where the needle went in, and they settle within about 20 minutes. Some people bruise, particularly around the eyes. Bruising gets more likely if you’ve recently taken aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, or vitamin E, so mention anything you’re taking.

When You'll See Results, and How Long They Last

Most people notice things softening within three to five days, and the full result arrives around the two-week mark. Expect it to hold for three to four months.

Try not to judge your result before day 14. The most common mistake is booking a touch-up on day five, when the product simply hasn’t finished working. If something looks uneven early on, give it the full two weeks before deciding anything.

How long it lasts varies a fair amount from person to person. A fast metabolism, heavy exercise, and strong muscles all shorten it. Most patients settle into treating three or four times a year once they’ve found their rhythm. Masseter treatment tends to run longer, closer to four to six months, because the dose is larger.

What to Do After Your Botox Appointment

Stay upright for about four hours, skip hard exercise for the rest of the day, and keep your hands off the treated areas. Those three cover most of what matters.

Staying upright and not touching your face serve the same purpose, which is leaving the product exactly where your injector placed it. Rubbing, lying flat, or booking a facial too soon can shift it slightly, and a couple of millimeters is the difference between a smooth brow and a heavy one.

Heat is the other thing to watch on day one. Saunas, hot yoga, and hard cardio all raise circulation and can make swelling or bruising worse. All three are fine again the next morning.

Otherwise, go about your day as usual. Wear makeup, wash your face gently, and keep your normal routine. Alcohol thins the blood a little, so skipping it for 24 hours lowers your chance of a bruise.

What Happens If You Stop

If you stop treating, your muscles regain full movement over three or four months and your lines return to roughly where they would have been anyway. Botox doesn’t make wrinkles worse, and it doesn’t create a dependency.

The myth sticks around because of how the return feels. After months of reduced movement, ordinary movement registers as sudden and dramatic even though your face has only gone back to baseline. Nothing was damaged along the way.

There’s a reasonable argument running in the opposite direction. Patients who treat consistently over several years often need fewer units as time goes on, because muscles that contract less forcefully build less habitual strength. Preventative treatment works on the same logic, which is why people in their late twenties and thirties start before static lines have had a chance to set.

Masseter Botox for Jaw Slimming and Grinding

Botox in the masseter, the large chewing muscle at the back of your jaw, can slim a square jawline and ease teeth grinding. Dosing runs higher here, usually 20 to 30 units per side.

Two very different patients ask for it. One wants a softer lower face, since an enlarged masseter widens the jaw. The other is grinding at night, waking up with a sore jaw or a headache, and wants some relief. The treatment addresses both at once.

Results build slowly in this area. Grinding relief often arrives within a couple of weeks, while visible slimming takes six to eight weeks as the muscle quiets down.

How much does Botox cost in Mission Viejo?

At Dermacare it’s $14 per unit with a nurse injector and $16 with a physician, with 15% off for members. A forehead treatment at roughly 20 units comes to about $280. Other providers in the area publish rates between $12 and $18 per unit.

Around 20 for most people. Strong forehead muscles need more. Treating the forehead on its own without the frown lines can occasionally drop the brow, so your injector may suggest doing both together.

Softening starts at three to five days. The full result arrives at about 14 days.

Three to four months for most facial areas, and four to six months for masseter treatment.

Most people say no. The needle is very fine and each injection takes about a second. If you’re worried about it, tell your injector before you start.

Give it about four hours. Staying upright keeps the product where it was placed.

Wait until the next day for anything strenuous. A walk is fine.

Don’t rub or massage the treated areas, don’t lie flat for four hours, skip hard exercise and heat for the rest of the day, and leave the alcohol for 24 hours.

Most patients treat every three to four months. Coming in more often than every 12 weeks isn’t recommended and won’t improve your results.

No. There isn’t adequate safety data, so we don’t treat pregnant or breastfeeding patients.

Only if you’re over-dosed. Tell your injector how much movement you want to keep, and be specific about it. A natural result is a dosing decision, and you’re allowed to ask for one.

They’re all neuromodulators and they work the same way, with some differences in how they spread and how quickly they take effect. We offer all three, and your injector can talk through which suits the areas you want treated.
