At Dermacare of San Diego, under the direction of Dr. Birchall, we have performed over twenty-eight thousand Botox injections for patients looking to reduce signs of premature aging around the eyes and in the brow line. Botox or onabotulinumtoxinA is known all over the world as the original injectable to smooth out the wrinkles that cause men and women to appear aged beyond their years. Whether or not you’re sure about the mechanics of why and how wrinkles form, the problem is facial movement. When we talk about facial movement, we mean the formation of facial expressions that display our emotions and what we feel so that we can accurately convey that to others in conversation.
However beneficial expression and facial movements are for basic life function, wrinkles are an inevitable side effect. However small, wrinkles tend to change the appearance of the face at rest to make us all appear unapproachable or upset. In consultation with Dr. Birchall, he will ask you to look into the mirror and squint; as soon as you see the wrinkles form in between the brows, at the top of the nose and around the corners of the eyes, you’ll know why you need to find a solution to relax the skin. This is where Botox injections will make all the difference in your look.
- Glabellar lines
- Crow’s feet
- Bunny lines
- Gummy smile
How does Botox work and how is it applied?
Before Dr. Birchall administers the Botox injection, he will assess the area and particular wrinkles you want to be treated; he doesn’t focus on the lines specifically, but the muscle that creates those lines. In just five injection points—tiny pokes into the skin—Dr. Birchall injects onabotulinumtoxinA directly into the muscle, blocking any nerve impulses that cause the muscle to contract.
While Botox will not offer the same results as a facelift or brow lift, it will relax the muscle at about 75 percent which is a marked improvement. Many of our patients have noticed reduced activity from sweat glands in the forehead as well which can be beneficial if you’re someone that sweats more than you would like. As a result of reduced sweat gland activity, acne flare- up’s are minimized.
Are there risks associated with Botox injections?
As with any skin treatment, there are some risks, but in our time offering the Botox injection we have never observed our patients having any significant reactions. However, in some cases, you may notice some slight bruising. Dr. Birchall explains the mechanics of Botox within your consultation and always refers to Botox as a protein-based formula to reduce any concern about its neurotoxin distinction.
How long does Botox last?
Botox injections last anywhere from 3-4 months as the body repairs the change in the nerve to muscle communication. The more important thing about Botox is that it isn’t permanent so if you don’t like the results, it will wear off.
